What is Ido?
Ido is an International Auxiliary Language, a constructed language designed for cross-cultural communication.
- Wikipedia Article on Ido gives an overview of Ido's development, history, current status, structure, and grammar. This article is a good jumping-off point, with many Ido-related links to explore.
- The Ido Wikipedia site has some 15,000 articles written in Ido. Although a majority of the articles are only one to two lines long, you can find many meaty pieces good for practicing your Ido reading skills and expanding your vocabulary and mastery of idiom.
- The Ido international organizational home site is Uniono por la Linguo Internaciona Ido. Click on the "English" link for a list of introductory articles, vocabulary lists, and tutorials.

Ido is a "constructed" language, designed by linguists to be easy to learn and fun to use as a universal second language for international communication. You can learn to read, write, and speak Ido in just six weeks! You can use this "language without borders" to connect up with other Ido speakers in countries around the world. Ido is also an excellent entry to language study in general. Ido students develop language-learning skills they can apply to the study of any language, including their own "mother tongue".
How to Join NAIS
Although NAIS is designed for Idists from the United States and Canada, anybody from anywhere in the world is welcome to join. Membership is free. Just send an email with subject "NAIS", with content showing your full name, country of residence, and email return address to jmuelver@gmail.com. Your name and address will not be shared or released to anyone else, or to any other organization or company. We will use your email address for sending notifications and announcements, with your permission, and for no other purpose. You may choose not to receive notifications and announcements, if you wish.
Donations
Knowledge is free... but web sites, printing books, shipping, and educational programs cost money. North American Ido Society, Inc., is a non-profit educational organization staffed by unpaid volunteers. Your contribution will help provide materials and program development to promote the establishment of Ido as the world's foremost auxiliary international language. We can accept donations through PayPal, or by check (North American Ido Society, Inc., N8341 County Road B, Deerbrook, WI 54424). NAIS Publications
- New release (1.6) of "Ido for All", the classic Ido instruction course for English speakers, reformatted for printing by North American Ido Society, is available for purchase at Lulu.com in printed book format. Go to "Ido for All" to see a preview chapter, and order books for all your friends, neighbors, and countrymen!
- The free PDF version of "Ido for All" release 1.6 can also be downloaded here for your personal use. The free working-source version 1.4 is edited by Bebson Y. Takata, and is available at http://www.geocities.jp/hochfeld/. Contact Jerry Muelver at jmuelver@idomondo.org for information about source files, revisions and upgrades to "Ido for All" release 1.6.
- The English-Ido, Ido-English dictionary we use is David Mann's "Ido Dictionaries by Dyer". Get the zipped HTML file set here, unzip it on your computer (all the files into one directory), and put it at the top of your "Favorites" (or Bookmark) list for easy access. Or, for Windows users, get the compiled ebook here, unzip it, and double-click on idodictionary.exe to run the dictionary in ebook format.
- "Tradukilo" by the North American Ido Society is a series of browser-based
tools offering instant dictionary look-up to help your reading or translating activities. Put the text (copy/paste) into the top window, select any word you don't know (or would like to look up), and click on "Translate". The dictionary definition for the selection appears in the bottom window. You can even scroll up and down in the dictionary around the definition to explore near-by options.
- "Translation Assistant" by the North American Ido Society is a series of Windows-based tools offering instant dictionary look-up to help your reading or translating activities. Put the text (or load a file) into the top window, select any word you don't know (or would like to look up), and right-click the mouse on the selection. The dictionary definition for the selection appears in the bottom window. You can even scroll up and down in the dictionary around the definition to explore near-by options.
